Exercise and sleep are connected through the same physiological wiring that regulates your stress response, body temperature, and heart rhythm. A workout raises your core temperature and activates your sympathetic nervous system, the "get moving" branch that also raises heart rate and alters heart rate variability. What the research shows
A 2015 meta-analytic review pooling 66 studies through 2013 found that a single bout of exercise brings small benefits: slightly more total sleep time, faster sleep onset, better sleep efficiency, and a modest boost in slow-wave (deep) sleep.
