After Dinner Rest a While, After Supper Walk a Mile: What Science Says About Post-Meal Walks

Ayurveda

The Sushruta Samhita's Sutrasthana XLVI lays out an exact sequence: rest "like a king" until post-meal drowsiness passes, then walk a hundred paces, the classical satapavali, before finally lying on the left side amid soft sounds and pleasant sights. Separately, its Chikitsasthana XI prescribes a far more vigorous regimen, including exercise, wrestling, riding, long walks, and archery, once prameha, the classical counterpart of diabetes, has "made a decided advance." That vigorous prescription is independent of the after-meal satapavali, making Ayurveda the only tradition surveyed here that ties movement directly to the diabetes-like disease itself rather than confining it to digestion.

What the science saysThe gentle satapavali fits what trials find about light post-meal movement and glucose handling, while the separate, more vigorous prameha regimen touches on a use modern glucose-response trials weren't designed to test (PMID:36715875).
